Thailand Visa-Free for Indians 2026: Updated Rules & Travel Tips
Thailand's visa-free policy for Indian passport holders continues in 2026 — but there are important updates, new tourist levies, and entry process changes that every traveller should know before booking.
Current Status: Still Visa-Free (2026)
Indian passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days per visit. This policy, introduced in late 2024, has been extended through 2026 as part of Thailand's push to attract South Asian tourism.
Important: Always verify the current entry policy at thai.e-visa.go.th before booking, as Thailand's exemption lists are reviewed periodically.
New in 2026: Thailand Tourist Fee
Thailand has approved a tourist arrival fee that is expected to come into effect in 2026. This fee — proposed at THB 300 (~₹700) for air arrivals — will be:
- Collected at the point of sale (airlines may add it to the ticket price)
- Or payable via a dedicated app/QR code at immigration
- Used to fund a national tourist insurance scheme covering accidents during your stay in Thailand
This is NOT a visa fee — it's a travel levy similar to Bali's tourism tax.
What You Need at Immigration (2026)
| Document | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Passport | 6+ months validity beyond return date |
| Return/onward ticket | Mandatory — officers may deny entry without it |
| Hotel/accommodation proof | Required |
| Funds | THB 20,000 (~₹46,000) per person or THB 40,000 per family |
| Tourist fee | New 2026 requirement (see above) |
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TM6 Replacement)
Thailand has begun phasing out the paper TM6 arrival/departure card in favour of a Digital Arrival Card. From 2026:
- Register your arrival details online before boarding at tdac.immigration.go.th
- A QR code is issued — show this at immigration
- Saves time at immigration queues
This is free and takes about 3 minutes to complete.
Overstay Consequences in Thailand (Stricter in 2026)
Thailand has implemented stricter overstay enforcement:
| Overstay Duration | Fine | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| 1–90 days | THB 500/day (max THB 20,000) | Fine + deportation |
| 90+ days | Automatic ban | 1 year ban from Thailand |
| 365+ days | Arrested if caught in Thailand | 5 year ban |
Always leave Thailand before your permitted stay expires.
New Attractions Opening in 2026
Bangkok
- One Bangkok (fully open 2026): A mega mixed-use development — Thailand's largest — featuring luxury hotels, shopping, office space, and cultural venues around a central park. Located near Lumpini Park.
- Bangkok Century developments around the new Eastern Economic Corridor continue to expand.
Chiang Mai
- New Chiang Mai International Airport Terminal (under expansion) for higher capacity.
- Expanded night markets and artisan culture zones.
Phuket Smart City Initiative
Phuket is investing in smart tourism infrastructure — digital queue systems at major attractions, sustainable beach zones, and EV transport on the island.
Responsible Tourism in Thailand 2026
Thailand has cracked down on several tourist behaviours:
- Elephant riding on beaches is now banned in Phuket and Krabi.
- Drone flying near temples and national parks requires a permit.
- Jet ski scams in Phuket are well-documented — only use operators with official stickers and always photograph the jet ski before renting.
- Maya Bay (The Beach) has strict daily visitor caps — book timed entry tickets in advance.
2026 Exchange Rate & Costs
The Thai Baht (THB) fluctuates around ₹2.2–2.5 per baht. Budget estimates for 2026:
| Category | Daily Cost (per person) |
|---|---|
| Budget traveller | ₹2,200–3,800 |
| Mid-range | ₹4,500–9,000 |
| Luxury | ₹13,000+ |
Bangkok remains cheaper than Bali or Singapore for mid-range travel.
